The Mayor of Saranac Lake proposes a consensus building group following a request by the Adirondack Rails to Trails Assocation who has asked the village board to approve a resolution in support of their efforts to build a recreational trail on the tracks..
Mayor Rabideau says he has received 23 emails from residents and organization supporting the concept of having rails remain. At a recent meeting of the Village Board, Mayor Rabideau said he discovered that the opportunity to “Rail Bank” the Rails to support the new recreational trail financially may not be possible, because it’s a state thoroughfare, He also felt that there really wasn’t any definition of the proposed use of the trail such as ATVs, four wheelers, or other moterized use.. and he says he also discovered the corridor is on the national historic register..
Deputy Mayor Tom Catillaz says he doesn’t think it would be a good idea to sign any resolution until there is a consensus and says he favors the idea of keeping the rails and adding a trail.. Trustee Rice added she would like to learn more about the proposals and to identify the issues which continue to unfold. The board decided to hold a stakeholder’s meeting to bring all of the interested parties together, a decision on the schedule and dates will be decided at the next Saranac Lake Village Board Meeting..
