State Labor Department Releases August 2012 Area Unemployment Rates

     The State Labor Department today released local area unemployment rates for August 2012, as determined by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL).  As reported last week, the state’s unemployment rate was 9.1% in August 2012.

     Over the past year, the state added more than 130,000 private sector jobs, and the number of initial unemployment insurance claims decreased by 10%, from 106,818 in August 2011 to 96,334 in August 2012.  

     The unemployment rate and job count for New York and every other state are determined by the USDOL. The unemployment rate is calculated primarily on the results of a telephone survey of 3,100 households (out of more than 7 million) in New York State.  The private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 employers.  Due to its larger sample size, the payroll survey is considered a reliable gauge of the state’s economy.

The data above are not seasonally adjusted, which means they reflect seasonal influences (e.g., holiday and summer hires).  Therefore, the most valid comparisons with this type of data are year-to-year comparisons of the same month; for example, August 2011 versus August 2012.

 Unemployment rate highlights in August 2012:

 §  The counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates include:

  • Hamilton County (5.2%)
  • Tompkins County (6.7%)
  • Yates County (6.8%)
  • Ontario County (6.9%)
  • Saratoga County (6.9%)

 

§  The counties in New York State with the highest unemployment rates include:

  • Bronx County (13.1%)
  • Orleans County (11.3%)
  • St. Lawrence County (10.8%)
  • Fulton County (10.6%)
  • Kings County (10.5%)

 

 

Note: Labor force statistics, including the unemployment rate, for New York and every other state are based on statistical regression models specified by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  These are the most up-to-date estimates of persons employed and unemployed by place of residence.  Estimates are available for New York State, labor market regions, metropolitan areas, counties, and municipalities of at least 25,000.
