K&J – Touring the Bloomingdale School

The Saranac Lake Central School Board is spending a lot of time in executive session lately as they work out the details of individual contracts and negotiations continue in hopes of finalizing a new contract and while this means the public has to wait outside but there is one advantage to waiting.. Wednesday Night’s meeting is at the Bloomingdale School and we had an opportunity to tour the facility with school Principal Theresa Lindsay..

Our First stop is a 4th grade classroom, and the first thing you’ll notice in Bloomingdale, no doors.. Erika Bezio teaches the 4th grade, she says the children follow the matrix of the school for PBIS perfectly.. (Click here for more on the PBIS program)

K&J – 110812 – Bloomingdale School Tour and WIT balls

The Architecture of the facility includes one primary hallway and we start at the first grade end in our impromptu tour of the school which takes us past the classrooms, and into the main lobby and from there the transition between the old building and the new.. We stop at the teacher’s Library room managed by Diane LeBlanc.. The room is long and narrow and looks like one it’s combined another closet through a door in the middle, needless to say, it’s filled top to bottom on every wall with teaching materials, books, different color red, white, blue and grey plastic containers..  Next we are in the Bloomingdale School’s library which is a very comfortable space – it just feels inviting as you walk in – and one of the tools they use, a projector which helps teachers make the best use of technology in the classroom.

Part of our tour included a stop in one of the third grade classrooms. Erin Canning Oneil is a third grade teacher here in Bloomingdale – She’s implemented a new program for the kids that changes the way they sit in the classroom.. The WIT Ball is a therapeutic seat for children and are similar to exercise balls with one primary exception, they’re designed with four rubber posts on the bottom to keep them stable. Erin says she thinks this will be a positive new step for students in her class.. The students will also take personal ownership in the program, learning math skills. Other lesson plans are included with the introduction of the WIT Balls.
