The Town of Harrietstown becomes the most recent municipality to ask New York State to re-visit the Unit Management Plan for the Rail Corridor between Lake Placid and points South of the Adirondacks…. Recently, Iowa Pacific Holdings announced their interest in working with the Adirondack Scenic Railroad to restore the rail line between Utica and Lake Placid. Iowa Pacific would then expand their current offerings including scenic excursion train rides and special trains and private railcar charters which are available now in southern parts of New York State.
ANCA’s position is that opening a discussion among all of the stakeholders will derail the potential Iowa Pacific Investment in the region because of the time it would take to finalize an updated version of the plan, and that during such time, everything would be put on hold.. Joe Mercurio is on the other side of the fence from the people who represent the railroad’s interests.. He tells the board ARTA thinks they may not benefit from the review of the UMP but it’s in the best interest of the community to bring everyone to the table.
Councilman Ron Keough said he recommended to the board that it belongs in the public domain and “that public domain” in his view was a unique Unit Management Plan and how we understand and move forward with the process..
Keough also says that based on his understanding of the speed at which the Unit Management Plans are being considered at a much faster speed and Coucilwoman Nicole Meyette concurred saying their hopes would be that it could be completed as quickly as two years.
The Board’s vote to approve the resolution asking the DOT to re-visit the Rail Corridor Unit Management Plan was unanimous.
