AUDIO – 051713 – Saranac Lake 6er Program – Mayor Clyde Rabideau Speaks with Media

We’ll find out Saturday, May 25th during a special event at the Berkley Green in Saranac Lake..  Saturday at 8am will mark the beginning of the 6er program in Saranac Lake with registration beginning at 7am. Activities will begin again at 3pm as Saranac Lake’s Mayor Clyde Rabideau and others await the arrival of the first to hike all six peaks in order to become a Saranac Lake 6er. The mountains include St. Regis Mountain, Baker Mountain, Ampersand Mountain, Haystack, Scarface and McKensie Mountain.

Due to the overwhelming interest and enthusiasm from hikers who are planning to climb one or more of the Saranac Lake 6ers on Saturday, May 25th, we are now accepting online pre-registration. Click here for the Saranac Lake 6er Website

The Village asks for you to help them plan for 6er weekend by telling them you are coming and what your hiking plans include by filling out the form at the Saranac Lake 6er website  Remember, if you will be attempting to be one of the first 6ers (and by default one of the first Ultra 6ers), you must register and be present at Berkeley Green in Downtown Saranac Lake for the 8AM start on Saturday, May 25th.

The Saranac Lake 6er Map;

The first edition of the Saranac Lake 6er Map and Trail Guide is complete! Look for it soon around town including at the Saranac Lake Visitors Center at 193 River Street in Saranac Lake and the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism Visitor Center at 2608 Main Street in Lake Placid.

There are three official logos: “The 6er,” for climbing all 6 peaks; “The Ultra 6er,” for climbing the mountains within 24 consecutive hours; and the “Winter 6er,” for climbing all the peaks during the winter months.

Kelly Brunette and Jeremy Evans from the village’s Community Development Office developed the logo prototypes that garnered the votes on Facebook and then, using the many comments made on the post, Greg Moore, owner of Bear Essentials—a Saranac Lake custom screen printing and embroidery firm—made the final renderings from the winning prototype .

The Saranac Lake 6er program is designed to increase visitors and tourism in Saranac Lake and the Adirondacks by using the “Adirondack 46er” model to bring hikers to the six nearby mountain peaks encircling Saranac Lake:  McKenzie Mt., Ampersand Mt., Scarface Mt., Haystack Mt., St. Regis Mt., and Mt. Baker.

There is a need to market the other great hiking mountains in the Adirondack Park to more evenly distribute the traffic and to introduce visitors to other great areas of the Adirondack Park and the Saranac Lake 6er Program will do just that.
