The drenching skies of the past weeks finally allowed precious rays of sunshine to shine upon Lake Flower this Independence Day as 63 paddlers in 22 watercraft gathered at the Riverside Park start and finish line for the third running of the Mayor’s Cup Paddle Race which saw Lars Linde take home the top honor. Linde paddled the “round-the-buoy” half mile course, far outdistancing the rest of the field, to become the third name added to the Mayor’s Cup Trophy, awarded to the top finisher in this race which first started in late August of 2010 and run again in 2011 before taking a “re-tooling” break last year.
Mayor Clyde Rabideau commented, “This year, we changed the date to the more convenient Fourth-of-July and simplified it to the great delight of both paddlers and spectators, which made it a great success.”
Linde’s daughter, Isabella Linde, finished second behind her dad, in the Single Person Kayak division. “Team David Webb” won the Canoe Division and Team Dewey Mountain, which finished second overall, won the “Rub-a-Dub” Division.
Notwithstanding, Team Independence was the fan’s favorite, as the 6-person team paddled lashed-together “out-rigger styled” canoes with the American Flag flying high between them, attached to a newly cut log-truss system, and gave everyone the patriotic feel for the day and garnered the coveted “Spirit Award.”
