Homeless Man Arrested In 2009 Killing Of Fashion Student

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A homeless man has been charged with the 2009 murder of a 23-year-old student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, police said Wednesday.

Jose Martinez, 20, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, murder, predatory sexual assault, criminal sex act, burglary and other crimes, authorities said.

In July 2009, Carmen Saldana was found dead and naked in a bed at her family’s home in the Astoria section of Queens, according to police and published reports. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide due to asphyxiation.

Martinez, who was 16 when Saldana was killed, was in custody Wednesday and unavailable for comment. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
