How Rare Is This Heat For September?

BOSTON (CBS) – Summer clearly isn’t done with us just yet.

Officially there are about ten days left to this season, but if you stepped outside Wednesday it sure felt like we are smack dab in the middle of July.

As of 3 p.m., the high temperature in Boston was a whopping 97 degrees! Throw in dew points near 70 and it actually feels like 100-to-105, easily one of the most sultry days of this entire summer.

So how rare is this for September?

We average one 90 degree day each September, and this is our first one (actually this is the first one in more than 50 days because we had none in August), so no breaking news there.

However, mid and upper 90′s is not typical this time of year at all. In fact, after September 10th, we have only hit 95 degrees or higher 5 times in recorded history, including an incredible 99 degrees on this very day 30 years ago.
