The Town of Harrietstown is again the recipient of a federal grant for the Adirondack Regional Airport.. Congressman Bill Owens says the Adirondack Regional Airport keeps the nation connected to larger regional hubs like Boston and gives tourists convenient access to the Adirondacks.. The United States Department of Transportation grant will fund the design stage of a project to repair the airports terminal apron, which has deteriorated from water intrusion and poor drainage.. it will also fund the design of a plan to replace drain pipes underneath the apron to address the lack of subsurface drainage..
The $85,405 grant just for the engineering phase seemed excessive so I asked Supervisor Bevilacqua for his thoughts on the expenses involved in a project like this.. He says keep in mind the apron has to support a 747 at rest on the tarmack and in order to do that, they have to focus on below the pavement. “Add the word Airport and it’s more expensive,” Bevilacqua said, “add the words Fire Departement to an axe and the axe becomes more expensive”
