Urban Outfitters Applies For Liquor License In Planned Williamsburg Location

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) — A clothing chain has raised eyebrows with a unique request in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

Urban Outfitters has submitted a liquor license application to Community Board 1 for a location that is being constructed on North 6th Street, The Daily News reported.

Local officials questioned the need for a bar inside of a clothing store.

“I can’t think of a circumstance for which it would be appropriate for Urban Outfitters to have a liquor license,” City Councilman Stephen Levine (D-Greenpoint) told the Daily News.

And Williamsburg residents may be hesitant to wet their whistles at a corporate clothing retailer.

“The whole point of bars in this neighborhood is that they are owned by people who live here. They are small local businesses,” Alicia Cantor-Palm told the paper.

Over 100 applicants have submitted requests for liquor licenses to Community Board 1 in September and will have a chance to make their case on October 3.

Community Board 1 will not serve as the final arbiter of liquor licenses in Williamsburg. The state will have the final say in who does and does not receive a license.
