After 70 years, the sport of Curling returned to the Saranac Lake Civic Center on Sunday afternoon as members of the Curling Club of Lake Placid joined with others including Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau and Village Trustee Tom Catillaz in the first of two “Learn to Curl” sessions aimed at introducing new members to the sport. The Mayor threw the first stone which settled in for the long trip down the ice and even without the “Sweepers” his practice shot came to rest on target. Many in the club tell us the key to the game is consistency and remembering the amount of force to bring the stone to a halt at just the right moment is the key to the game. “Newbies” as they were referred to during the session were given a crash course in the rules and style points and the games began..
The next “Learn to Curl” session is next Sunday (October 27th, 2013) at 3:15pm at the Saranac Lake Civic Center. The club begins their regular season the week following. Club Member Amber McKiernan tells us if you haven’t been to the first session, you’re welcome to come to the second to see if Curling may be right for you… Teams will be built with novices and seasoned players on each side.
