The Village Board in Lake Placid gives the green light to hold the Eastern Region Water Ski Championships on Mirror Lake July 31st through August 3rd.. John Wilkins is a competitor and also one of the organizers of this championship event. Competition will happen the same week as Rugby Weekend.. and should provide ample opportunity for spectators to not only the slalom competition, but also the trick portion and the jump portions of the event which will be staged to provide a remarkable experience for athletes and visitors to experience the competition up close from the shoreline in Mids Park..
Wilkins is a life long tournament water skier.. When the Lake Placid Water Ski Championships were held on MirrorLake in the 80s and 90s, He was one of the primary participants in the planning and logistics for the event.. Terrence Fogarty is another tournament water skier.. He runs Fogarty’s Marina in Saranac Lake.. We asked him for his thoughts on the financial impact of an event like this on his business..
Organizers had originally approached the board at a previous meeting but were asked to return with some additional information addressing some of the concerns associated with allowing such an event to occur.. and Wilkins didn’t disappoint.. He provided the board with several aerial views of the lake detailing the relatively small area required on the lake for the competition to take place.. Roughly 35% of the lake will be utilized for the championships (mostly in front of Mids Park) while the balance will remain open for recreational use for renters of canoes and kayaks as well as other activities.. Village Trustee Jason Leon said he felt they were moving in a direction that allowed him to feel much more comfortable now that it seems that many of the initial questions have been answered..
Organizers this year will work with a village commissioner to coordinate an efficient response to any issues which may arise, whether from the use of Mid’s Park or MirrorLake…
