K&J – Saranac Lake School Board Begins Public Budget Review

The Saranac Lake Central School has begun an extensive review of their budget for next year.. The School Board and Superintendent Diane Fox have agreed to take a very careful and specific look at every aspect of the budget and where it begins.  “Music and Sports are the two big items that are usually at the forefront of budget discussions.” Fox Said,  and she’s decided to put it up first because she didn’t want the budget period to be overshadowed with just the back and forth conversation about these to categories..

71% of students in the Saranac Lake Central School District participating in one or both of these areas..  After the presentation we caught up with Keith Kogut who shares management of the music department with Drew Benware and asked him for his thoughts..

The information, especially in the case of athletics and music, according to Superintendent Fox, may have been the hardest to gather but the objective for all of the different aspects of the budget is to provide a similar look at each issue and identify the real costs associated with each of those departments.. Next on the agenda on February 5th the Preliminary Budget Forecast, That presentation will be followed on February 15th with a look at program costs and the process will continue into march with another two presentations on different aspects of the budget..  All of these presentations will be followed by additional community conversations to help fine tune the budget and present the community with a proposal for the ballot that at the end of the day, they can all approve
