Opening Ceremonies for the Empire State Winter Games are tonight in the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid.. and The Official Winter Games Torch began it’s journey in Tupper Lake on Wednesday with a sendoff from every student in the Tupper Lake Central School District… Russ Bartlet is the Athletic Director and Student Coordinator at the High School…
The snow is falling just about everywhere in the State of New York at this point, except for this one little blip on the radar open to the clouds and just as this event began, that little blip must have been over the football field because it stopped snowing for about 15 or 20 minutes while the kids were all getting ready for the picture… There’s an orange ball of string that’s been stretched out from one nail to another making up the outline of an Olympic torch and students are filling in the outline and in and among the crowd of students we found Tupper Lake Central School Superintendent Seth McGowan.. he says the last time they did something like this was for the anniversary of the September 11th World Trade Center bombings in new York City..
McGowan tells us each section of the torch will be filled with different grade levels with the high school at the top down to the youngest and each of the grades will have a different color piece of construction paper..
The Photographer is Ted Merrihew, we caught up with him after the students had taken their lap around the field and he’d navigated his way back down to the truck from high up in his perch about 80 feet in the air..
The Official Torch made it’s way from Tupper Lake and from Stewarts in Saranac Lake to the Ice Palace.. and then into the Community of Lake Placid. The Opening Ceremonies of the Games are tonight in the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena at the Olympic Center..
