Bob Brown is a life time member and a past President of the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club has been one of the organizers involved in The Lake Colby Classic since it’s beginning 30 years ago. Although you do not have to be a member of the fish and game club to partake in the Upcoming Colby Classic Brown Says it’s easy to join. All you need to do is pick up an application at Blue Line Sports Shop in Saranac Lake and be recommended by a current member then you are free to use all their facilities and they always have something going on….The Colby Classic is in its 30th year and Brown says it will be fun for the whole family. There will be prizes and giveaways for registered entry’s and spectators.
Brown Says, despite its name, the Lake Colby Classic is not limited to only Lake Colby. There are four fish that can get you a win in this derby including Perch, Salmon, Trout and Pike broken down further into youth and adult divisions. Brown says, The grand prize awarded is a fishing trip for Five run by Fish Doctor Charters. Aside from the standard prizes awarded for the size of your fish, there are some added incentives, Brown Says. These sponsored fish such as Vick Schwartz Memorial fish and Bob Brown’s lucky Catch are all tagged and stocked in Lake Colby just a few days before all throughout the lake.
The Colby Classic runs March 1st and 2nd and will begin with a shotgun start and runs till 4 pm each day. All eligible fish must come in alive including the Pike caught from other bodies of water. The fish will then be weighed and measured and recorded on the bulletin board at the boathouse headquarters at Lake Colby. Brown says, they have always had a good turnout for the Colby Classic and with this being the 30th annual, we should expect a great turnout.
Brown says, with over two feet of ice, it is deemed safe this year but as always when you drive out on the ice you do so at your own risk. In the past people have reserved their lucky spots on Lake Colby, drilled their holes and put up their shanties in advance and that’s okay Brown says, but they fish will never cease to surprise you.
