The Sunrise Rotary in Plattsburgh and the City of Plattsburgh are Sailing into the 37th Annual Mayor’s Cup Festival July 10th through the 13th.. A festival with a long history of free family fun celebrating the region, the community and Lake Champlain… Plattsburgh Mayor Jim Calnon summed up the event at a press conference on Wednesday Afternoon in the Council Chambers.
The events are highlighted by the Mayor’s Cup Regatta on Lake Champlain and this year Mayor Calnon says he spoke to Burlington’s Mayor Miro Weinberger about a friendly City versus City Challenge.. “At some point we’re going to agree on the challenge – it may be that I end up coming to work in a chicken suit”
One of the bigger events for Plattsburgh’s Sunrise Rotary Club has become the Boat Parade of Lights which is being given a bit of a lift this year by the committee.. Co-Chair Jake DeSnyder explains that they hope to add some new prizes to the mix.. which will be done as a random drawing so that everyone can participate”
Much of the fundraising comes through T-Shirt Sales… Kathy Duley says The Mayor’s Cup Backpacks are a new affordable way to sport the Mayor’s Cup Logo…Katie Genette Caska says the Logo itself has a big number 37 in the Blue and Green Spinnaker on a purple boat – the color of the T-Shirts by the way.. with complimentary blue Red Green and Yellow Flags with White letters spelling out Mayors Cup Regatta and Festival..There’s a Yellow Sun which spells out the relationship between the City of Plattsburgh and the Sunrise Rotary Club..
Mayor Jim Calnon is sitting to the Left of Two Co-Chairs of the event Jake DeSnyder and Kevin Kehoe.. They’re flanked in the Council Chambers by other members of the Mayor’s Cup Committee on both sides.. There are also other members of the committee in the audience as well as Plattsburgh Council members Josh Kretzer and Rachelle Armstrong
The Mayor’s Discretionary Fund is going to support additional activities for the crowd at the Boat Basin who usually arrive early for the Parade of Lights and are in need of some entertainment prior to the parade’s beginning.. One of the other events that’s been added to this year’s events on the water is The Kayak Shack Recreational Kayak Race which will depart from the Sandy Beach at the Naked Turtle on Saturday at 10am… Molly Flynn is in charge of that event..
Something new this year for Landlubbers is the Mayor’s Cup Soccer Challenge… Andy Wiley is one of the organizers of that event which will be held this year in Conjunction with Mayor’s Cup Activities..
Mayor Jim Calnon will no doubt be participating in more than just the Pie Eating Contest.. Including the Fireworks, musical entertainment, the fun run, the CVPH Bike Ride, and many other activities that are planned through the weekend…
