Discussing Fire Districts in the North Country

The Town of Harrietstown is hosting a public presentation on the formation of a regional fire district in the Auditorium at the Harrietstown Town Hall..  Currently the Village of Saranac Lake is responsible for the department and the village also has the taxing authority for the Fire Department Budget..  Village Trustee Allie Pelliteiri says he sees this meeting as an opportunity to investigate the options..

Pelliteiri says the concept would be to include Bloomingdale and Paul Smith’s / Gabriels in the district.. and then the thought is that with a fire district, the main Fire Department in SaranacLake would respond immediately with a truck and manpower.. Pellitiere added that it’s another opportunity for the regional communities, the Town and the Village to consolidate and share services as the Governor has been suggesting in his State of the State Address as well as many of the incentives he’s been passing on to local governments.

Pellitiere says a few years ago he was against even considering the possibility of creating a fire district but there were some reasons for that – one of which was governmental oversight of the district.. But now, he says, they understand that there could in fact be oversight which could allow the village to continue to appoint the leadership of the district even if it were to become an entity on it’s own with it’s own taxing authority…  At the Meeting Wednesday Night, community leaders plan to hear from experts on the creation and management of fire districts in order to better understand the requirements of a transition, and subsequent oversight. Officials tell us that the law regarding fire districts in New YorkState in some cases is ambiguous and in other cases contradicts itself..  The Meeting will be held at the Harrietstown Town Hall Auditorium Tomorrow Night (Wednesday 03/05/14) at 6pm..
