From Camp Gabriels to Camp Hamachane

Camp Gabriels Correctional Facility is getting a new name… and it’s going to be home this summer to a group of young boys ages 10 to 18. The owners hope to have their 7 week camp up and running by this summer. Eli Hersch will be one of the owners of the Camp Gabriels property once the closing is official in about two weeks. He Spoke to a crowd of about 80 at the Visitor Interpretive Center at Paul Smith’s College on Tuesday Evening About his goals for the facility..  The camp will be for students of the Orthodox Jewish faith and will include classes during the mornings and activities through the afternoons and evenings. Right now, Hersch says he’s focused on the camp and they haven’t made any decisions as to operations for the facility during the rest of the year..

Franklin County Legislator Gordy Crossman told the group thinks the concept is very exciting and he says one of the things they’ll find is that people in this area, especially Brighton and the surrounding area are very warm people and he thinks his campers are going to really enjoy their experience.. The boys at the camp will spend mornings focused on education, both religions and otherwise and Hersch told the media afterwards that they hope to focus on Summer Hockey in the evenings at the Olympic Center, along with hiking, Canoeing, baseball and other activities in the region…
