The Village of Saranac Lake has declared a local emergency for the purposes of securing replacement of 460 feet of sanitary sewer on Duprey Street in the Village due to what is described in their declaration as Imminent failure of the line.. “The Declaration of a Local Emergency by the Village Board allows us to move very quickly to secure engineering and while we still have to follow the purchasing policy, the declaration will give us a few different choices when it comes to choosing contractors.” Commented Saranac Lake Village Manager John Sweeney, “There are already several contractors in the area who could be willing to work on this additional project. Some of them already have all of the necessary equipment in the area as well. The Emergency declaration enables us to reach out to them directly as opposed to putting the project out for bid. If we don’t get a reasonable offer, we may still have to go to bid but this saves about 30 days and with the failure of the piping imminent, time is of the essence.”
The 460 feet that would be repaired is just off of Lake Flower Avenue on Duprey street and with the emergency declaration, it may be as soon as three weeks for the repairs to begin.. Sweeney says it may be necessary to drain some of the water from the lake during construction to ease the issue..
