SLVFD Public Protection Classification Upgraded

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department has received an upgraded Public Protection Classification which means rates on fire insurance could be going down..  OverallVillage Manager John Sweeney says the department is upgraded from a Grade 5 to a Grade 4 and the department is about 9 points away from a Grade 3 classification.. which they may be able to achieve once he and DPW Superintendent Jeff Dora are able to re-submit their updated report showing additional upgrades to several hydrants in the village…

 The PPC program evaluates communities according to a uniform set of criteria, incorporating nationally recognized standards developed by the National Fire Protection Association and the American Water Works Association. A community’s PPC rating depends on Needed Fire Flows, Ability to receive and handle fire alarms, which includes an inspection of telephone systems, lines, staffing and dispatching..  The Fire Department itself, including equipment, staffing, training and geographic distribution of the companies, and Water Supply, including the condition and maintenance of Hydrants..
