Even though Hockey Season is over, 13 of the Lake Placid Blue Bombers are celebrating another kind of championship because these students have won the Statewide Scholar / Athlete Championship.. For a perspective on the team’s accomplishment we go to Lake Placid’s Athletic Director, Matt Walentuk “These students have won both on the ice but also in the classroom,” Walentuk said, “these students have had a great season and now are winners among competitors in the entire state. The Program recognizes Scholar athletes in Varsity Athletics. During this current year the Boys Hockey team finished top in the state in terms of cumulative GPA.”
“One of the things that Lake Placid has really brought to the Section Seven program when they joined the CVAC is a tremendous sportsmanship program,” commented Joe Staves, the former Athletic Director at Plattsburgh High School and a member of the NYS Public High School Athletic Association and is currently the treasurer. “When you win an athletic championship, there’s a lot of luck involved, but when you win the academic championship there’s no luck involved, it’s hard work, it’s effort and the education will stay with you 15 or 20 years later, everything you’ve done academically is going to be there.”
“The Boys hockey team had a remarkable season, they were 18 and 4, ranked number 6 in the state and only lost to a really good hockey team in our finals.” said Lake Placid Hockey Coach Brian Keith Clark, “When we found out we were in the running for the Scholar / Athlete award it took some of the sting out of that loss.” In Keith’s Blue Bomber Hockey Blog, he highlights some of the other teams who were competing for the top spot..
“Out of approximately 125 NYS high school hockey programs, 84 teams qualified as scholar athlete teams. We had 13 players meet the scholar-athlete standard and our top 8 propelled us to #1 in New York State.
