The Village of Saranac Lake Comprehensive Plan & Land Use Code Advisory Committee announced today that a draft of the revised zoning code has been released for public review. Copies are available for review at the Village Offices at 39 Main Street and at the Saranac Lake Free Library at 100 Main Street. The draft code is also available digitally on the Village’s website at www.saranaclakeny.gov. The committee also announced that a public input session will be held on Tuesday, June 17th at 7PM and a formal public hearing will be held on June 24th at 7PM. Both meetings will be held in the Cantwell Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library, 100 Main Street. The draft will then be referred to the Village Board for consideration and action.
The revised draft of the zoning code represents the culmination of a nearly seven year effort to update the Village Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code that was initiated in 2007. The Comprehensive Plan was adopted in April of last year and was the principal document that guided the updates for the land use code. Assigned to oversee the both the update of the plan and the zoning code is the Comprehensive Plan and Land Use Code Advisory Committee. The committee is a group of volunteer residents appointed by the Village Board of Trustees that has worked diligently sometimes meeting once a week for months at a time to update both documents.
The draft code attempts to bring zoning requirements in line with the planned initiatives from the Village Comprehensive Plan. The core elements of zoning relating to the zoning districts and allowed uses remain basically unchanged. The new code attempts to provide more detail and definition regarding the uses that are allowed. Additionally, the document is the “Unified Development Code” meaning that several previously separate and individual codes relating to land development such as subdivision regulations and flood damage prevention are now included within one code. The intent is to improve the efficiency of code administration while making the regulations easier to understand and follow.
Questions and comments regarding the draft code should be directed to Jeremy Evans, Community Development Director at (518) 891-4150, 39 Main Street, Saranac Lake, NY 12983 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
