Fatal Accident – Autopsies Released / Suspect Arrested

An autopsy was performed on James E. Barney at AMC Saranac Lake by Dr C. Francis Varga who determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma consistent with a motor vehicle collision.  Essex County Coroner Francis Whitelaw ruled the manner of death to be homicide.

An autopsy was performed on Kimberly Barney at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington, VT, by Dr Steven L. Shapiro, Vermont Chief Medical Examiner, who determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma consistent with a motor vehicle collision and the manner of death to be accidental.

Both deaths were a result of the collision on State Route 86 in the town of North Elba. The investigation is continuing by the State Police, including the Collision Reconstruction Unit, and the Lake Placid Police Department and the Essex County District attorney’s office.

SUSPECT FORMALLY ARRESTED & CHARGED

On July 24, 2014, subsequent to a fatal two-car collision on State Route 86, in Ray Brook that killed two people, State Police arrested 20-year-old Trevor J. Sisto of Fort Covington. He was charged with Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer 1st Degree, a D Felony, and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Sisto was further ticketed for Reckless Driving, Failure to Keep Right, and Speeding.

Lake Placid Police also charged Sisto with Attempted Assault 1st Degree, Reckless Endangerment, three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Motor Vehicle Accident, Reckless Driving, as well as numerous vehicle and traffic violations. Sisto was arraigned at the Village of Lake Placid Court.and at the Town of North Elba Court. He was remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail, or $200,000 bond and is scheduled to reappear on July 29, 2014, at 4 p.m.

This collision is still under investigation by State Police, Lake Placid Police and the Essex County District Attorney. Further charges against Sisto are pending.
