The Saranac Lake Central School Board is continuing it’s search for a board member to replace Deb Lennon.. and in Lake Placid, School Superintendent Roger Catania shares his goals for the school community and they’re broken down into three areas.. Instruction, and then a focus on the opportunity gap and then the third communication and collaboration.. When it comes to instruction, Catania says in terms of providing support and nurturing instruction while many aren’t particularly new.. they’re also not necessarily common core goals..
Catania says they’re also looking to promote new technology to enhance learning and promoting less worksheet and textbook instruction while emphasizing conceptual understandings rather than just covering the curriculum.. it’s a focus on promoting deeper conceptual and meaningful understandings of that curriculum..
As for the Opportunity Gap, the school’s Superintendent says this is something that is reflected in achievement.. Catania added that the opportunity gap is a big problem nationally and he’s identified ways to work on the issue in the local community.. One of those goals is to continue to look at implementing a high quality Pre K 4 Program… The District has applied for a state funded grant that would fund the program but there are limited funds available and it may take more than one round of applications for Lake Placid to see funding come from the governors office to support that goal..
Goal number three; The school has been implementing efforts to strengthen communication and collaboration which Catania says he believes they’ve been implementing in 2014 but he would like to see the work there continue..
The goals are laid out as follows;
1. Support and nurture improving Instruction
a. Building upon disciplinary knowledge especially in science, history, math, literature, languages, and the arts, as a foundation for higher levels of learning.
b. Writing instruction that develops hypotheses and arguments based on evidence
c. More interdisciplinary approaches to instruction, both within and across classes.
d. Higher quality texts and increased emphasis on reading within the content areas
e. Emphasizing problem solving, active learning experiences, student engagement, applying knowledge, critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation,
f. Utilizing new technology to enhance learning
g. Less rote, worksheet, and textbook-based instruction. Emphasize deeper conceptual understanding rather than covering the curriculum.
h. Utilize the tools at hand to support these efforts, including hiring practices, tenure expectations, professional development strategies, and resource allocation.
2. Strive to better understand and address the impact of the Opportunity Gap on student success.
a. Within school strategies, including the continued effort to establish a full-day, high-quality Pre-K 4 program.
b. Community strategies
c. Advocacy efforts toward greater equity
3. Increase and improve in the areas of Communication and Collaboration:
a. Further develop opportunities to understand the concerns shared by students, parents, teachers, staff, and other community stakeholders
b. Utilize in-person, survey, on-line, and committee strategies
c. Build upon present efforts to institutionalize these efforts so that they will endure into the future.
