Mercy Care for the Adirondacks, a renewed mission of the Sisters of Mercy established in 2007, announces that Jeremiah M. Hayes, a recently-retired attorney from Tupper Lake, has been elected to serve as its Board President. Jerry Hayes replaces Paul J. Reiss, Ph.D., whose board term expired in June. Mercy Care is governed by a local Board of Directors composed primarily of residents of Tri-Lakes communities.
Jerry has chaired Mercy Care’s Fund Development Committee. He served previously as Chairman of the Board of Adirondack Medical Center. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Adirondack Foundation. He served previously as a member of the Board of Directors of Tupper Lake National Bank. In addition to Jerry’s stellar qualifications as a community leader, he has a strong personal commitment to supporting ministries sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. He served previously as a member of the Board of Mercy Healthcare Center and Uihlein Mercy Center. He was honored in the past by the Sisters of Mercy with the Distinguished Service Catherine McAuley Award in 2001.
Jerry remarked, “Paul Reiss was Mercy Care’s founding President. His leadership resulted in rapid and strategic advancement of Mercy Care’s mission to enhance the fullness of life of elders in every dimension living in their community.” Mercy Care’s 100+ Friendship Volunteers and 12 Volunteer Parish Nurses are assisting 104 of their elder neighbors with friendship and companionship, health education and referral, and other assistance that they may need.
Paul Reiss said, “I cannot think of another person so well qualified and so well connected to his community than Jerry to lead Mercy Care forward. Jerry’s leadership will make it possible to advance Mercy Care’s new social model of extending mercy to elders living in their communities to relieve their isolation and loneliness and to serve as a catalyst and facilitator of systemic change to empower older adults to age in place more successfully.
