Historic Saranac Lake Hires Public Programs Coordinator

Historic Saranac Lake Parade - THUMBHistoric Saranac Lake says thay’ve hired Chessie Monks who is going to serve as the new Public Programs Coordinator for the Saranac Laboratory Museum.

Monks is a trained archivist, and brings experience working with collections and museums..  The organization plans to use her experience to make Saranac Lake history accessible to school groups, local organizations, and the general public..

Monk has a master’s degree in Library Science with a concentration in Archives Management from Simmons College in Boston..

The new Public Programs Coordinator position is supported by a Regional Economic

Development Council grant through New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Executive Director Amy Catania says, “The addition of Chessie to the staff will allow us to better connect with the public through improved exhibits, additional programming, and increased hours of operation. We’re so pleased that Chessie is joining our team and know that her enthusiasm and experience will serve us well.”

The Saranac Laboratory Museum is open Tuesday through Friday through the winter from 10:00 to 4:00. Starting in June, the museum will also be open on Thursday evenings until 7:00 and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 4:00. The expanded hours will continue through mid October.

The museum will unveil two new exhibits on June 5th: “Medical Marvels,” an exhibition

of antique medical devices, featuring artifacts on special loan arrangement from Ripley Entertainment, Inc., and a new permanent exhibition in the main laboratory space. Museum admission is $5, members and children free of charge.
