A
North Country Congressman is throwing his support behind legislation
aimed at quelling rising property taxes in New York.
Scott
Murphy represents New York’s 20th Congressional District. Last week,
he voted for the Tax Extenders Act of 2009, a bill that contains
about $31 million of tax relief.
According to representatives for the Congressman, the legislation
includes $5 billion in tax relief for individuals, $17 billion for
small businesses and $3.4 billion for strengthening communities.
The
law also ensures that military reservists don’t suffer pay cuts
through tax credits to small businesses that continue paying
salaries to National Guard and Reserve employees when they’re called
up to serve.
Murphy says holding the line on property taxes is crucial to
providing much-needed relief to families and small businesses in New
York.
“The
tax incentives in this bill will ease the burden on American
families and unleash private sector innovation, which will make
upstate New York more competitive and allow businesses to grow and
create jobs,” he said.
The
legislation also supplies tax credits to businesses that invest in
economically-depressed areas, real estate, low-income housing, and
clean energy initiatives.
