The Adirondack farmhouse where
abolitionist John Brown was buried 150 years ago this month is
getting some much-needed repairs.
The farmhouse located just outside
Lake Placid is part of the John Brown Farm State Historic Site.
State officials say the house built in the 1850s will get new
siding, window restoration and other repairs this winter.
Brown and his family lived at the
farmhouse at the time of his ill-fated raid on Harper’s Ferry in
what was then Virginia in October 1859. He was convicted of treason
and executed on December 2, 1859. His body was returned to upstate
New York and buried next to his farmhouse eight days later.
The 150th anniversary of
his burial was commemorated earlier this month with a symposium in
Lake Placid and other events.
