Gabriels Man Arrested for Animal Cruelty

A Gabriels man was arrested this week after police allegedly found numerous malnourished animals on his property.

State Police in Ray Brook, in conjunction with the Tri-Lakes Humane Society and the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office, investigated a cruelty to animals complaint on the Rainbow Lake Road in Gabriels on Tuesday.

The Humane Society removed one horse, eight chickens, four cats, a dog, two peacocks, a cockatiel and one guinea pig due to what police described as their malnourished condition, unsanitary living conditions and numerous untreated injuries.

The owner of the animals, 62 year-old John J. Guest, was arrested for misdemeanor failure to provide proper care to an animal.

He was also charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child, also a misdemeanor.

Police say the child in question was taken into custody by Franklin County Child Protective Services.

Guest was scheduled to be arraigned on the charges and, police said, will face further court action in the future.

The animals were removed from his property and taken to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society shelter in Saranac Lake.

Police said the animals were being checked by a veterinarian and provided any necessary medical care.
