Dewey Mountain Day to Feature Variety of Winter Activities

The Dewey Mountain Cross-Country Ski Center is gearing up for a day of winter activities for all ages.

Dewey Mountain Day takes place this Saturday, March 7, and features an interesting variety of events and races, headlined by the fifth annual Boxershort Triathlon Relay, and new this year the Ski Speed Trap sponsored by the Saranac Lake Village Police Department.

According to Steve Doxzon, owner and operator of Adirondack Lakes and Trails, said Dewey Day is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Adirondack Lakes and Trails maintains the facilities at Dewey Mountain and also is sponsoring this free event.

This year, Doxzon worked with the Saranac Lake Village Police Department to set up the Ski Speed Trap from noon to 1:15 p.m. This event lets skier see how fast they’re moving along the snow.

Police Chief Bruce Nason said the police department is happy to supply the radar gun for the event, and believes that it will be something fun and different for skiers to try their hand at.

The marquee event at Dewey Mountain Day is the Boxershort Triathlon Relay, an event that consists of skiing, snow shoeing and sledding. That race starts at 1 p.m.

“The Boxershort Relay is always our most fun event,” Doxzon said. “It’s fun to do and fun to watch. Participants ski around with a pair of boxershorts on, the next person has to snow shoe with the same pair, and so the exchange is always interesting. And then the third person sleds down the hill to the base area.”

The day also features the Dewey Mountain Biathlon Demo, which will allow skiers to try their hand at biathlon, a sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle marksmanship.

Food will be provided all day long, and spectators are invited to watch the children’s cross-country ski and snowshoe races, which start at 11 a.m.
