Court Hears Arguments on APA Authority to Regulate Farming

A midlevel appeals court is hearing arguments today on the authority of the Adirondack Park Agency to regulate housing for farmworkers inside the 6-million acre park.

The state agency is appealing the November ruling by a judge that the three modular homes Salim "Sandy" Lewis put on his 1,200-acre farm in Essex are exempt from APA permit requirements.

The Lewis Family Farm said it got town permits for the structures, but was fined by the APA which said the farm failed to obtain the agency's permits.

Arguments are being heard today in Albany.
