Art, Furniture and Sculpture: Influenced by Nature

at the Adirondack Museum

Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y. - Join painter and furniture artisan, Barney Bellinger, on Monday, August 20 for “Art, Furniture and Sculpture: Influenced by Nature.” The program is part of the Monday Evening Lecture series.

Barney Bellinger will discuss how nature has influenced his work as both a painter and a furniture artisan. Information and inspiration for Bellinger’s work is derived through a lifestyle of exploring backwoods, ponds, lakes and mountain trails. Foraging for raw materials is an opportunity to study natural forms and color. Bellinger is quoted saying “I do not paint to please critics, but rather to record my travels.”

Barney Bellinger, of Sampson Bog Studio, Mayfield, N.Y. creates paintings and furnishings that are inspired by his keen observation of wild, quiet places. He experiences the beauty of natural light and changing seasons in remote, natural landscapes from the Adirondacks to the American West. 

Bellinger’s intricate designs reveal a mastery of many techniques. His early brush work was focused on artistic decoration of custom motorcycles and cars. Later, he mastered premium sign work which incorporated flawless layout, intricate carving, and applied gold leaf. These highly-developed skills served him well when he returned to seek natural materials where he had started-enjoying fishing trips in the woods. Bellinger’s grandfather, who had worked in Adirondack logging camps, helped prepare him with practical knowledge of the woods and waters which are now the subjects of-and often provide the materials for-his commissioned artworks. Detailed paintings merge with carefully-chosen natural wood, stone and glass.

The Adirondack Museum’s 25^th Annual Rustic Furniture Fair, where Bellinger will be an exhibitor, will take place on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9. For additional information, visit www.adkmuseum.org.
