The Wild Center
Fourth Adirondack Youth Climate Summit
November 14th & November 15th, 2012

New at the fourth Adirondack Youth Climate Summit!

  • Plenary session and workshop by the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE), a national nonprofit dedicated to educating America’s high school students about the science behind climate change and inspiring them to do something about it—while having fun along the way.  ACE currently operates in 21 states nationwide, and has reached over 1.2 million students at 1,700+ schools in under three years.  They will return to the Adirondacks in January and visit schools that attended the Summit.
  • Dr. Curt Stager, from Paul Smith’s College, will explore how the Northeast has one of the most complicated weather systems in the world and how climate change could potentially affect the greater Adirondack ecosystem, using the Center’s newest experience Planet Adirondack.
  • Young people can be actively engaged in community planning, decision making and creating more sustainable communities.  Jen Cirillo from Shelburne Farms will show students how.
  • Nature can be transformational, but that fact is often overlooked today.  Brother Yusuf Burgess, Children & Nature Network Board Member, will talk about how nature can improve not just physical and mental health, but also academic performance and overall quality of life.
  • A Skype session with students from the International School of Vantaa in Finland and Heureka, the Finnish Science Museum who hosted the first Finnish Youth Climate Summit in September, based on the Adirondack model.

More than 160 participants from 28 high schools and colleges across the Adirondacks and New York State will attend, ultimately effecting more than 25,000 students.

The Summit is the only one of its kind in the country and has already led to financial savings and shifts in mindsets across the Park.  Students who participated last year returned to their schools implementing change – creating school gardens to provide food for their cafeterias, expanding recycling and composting programs, replacing power strips with energy smart strips, examining energy saving opportunities by conducting carbon audits for their schools and presenting to school boards about their activities and financial savings.

The full agenda for the event can be found on the website www.adkyouthsummit.org.  A list of attending schools can be found here.

If you plan to attend for all or part of the Summit, please let me know:

Advanced Directives Seminar

Adirondack Medical Center’s Director of Pastoral Care, Steve Kovacevich, will present a Seminar on Advanced Directives at Saranac Village at Will Rogers, on Wednesday, December 5th, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., as part of Saranac Village at Will Rogers’ Road to Retirement Series. The Road to Retirement Series, which began in September, features programs related to the challenges of retiring, solutions for organizing, and information on Veterans’ affairs, and will run through December and then begin again in February.

Advanced health care planning, or Advanced Directives as it is more commonly known, can consist of both oral and written orders intended to address a person’s health care wishes if he or she is unable to speak for themself. Anyone who is 18 years of age or older, or has a chronic disease, should be aware of the need for Advanced Directives. Likewise, it is important to take into consideration the need to plan ahead and inform those closest to you about your wishes for end-of-life decisions before the time comes. There are different forms of Advanced Directives, as well as many situations presenting their own set of individual questions.

This program is free for those 55 and older, open to the public and a special discount will be offered to new residents who attend the program and move in within 30 days of this program. Refreshments will be served. For information, please contact Director of Admissions, Jenn Grisi at (518) 891-7117.
