Scouting for Food is an on-going annual program of the Boy Scouts of America begun in 1985 by the Greater Saint Louis Area Council that collects food for local food banks. It is organized at the local level throughout the country. Scouting for Food is a project rooted in the very foundation of the Scouting movement and its dedication to do a implement the Scout Slogan to do good turn daily. Each year, local Boy Scouts leave plastic bags for their neighbors soliciting canned food items. One week later, the Scouts return to pick up and deliver the bags of food to a local food bank.
In Saranac Lake Cub Scout Pack 9 and Boy Scout Troop 1 partner and distribute bags to all Village homes on the first Saturday in November. Bags are picked up the following Saturday (11/10) morning. The troop is looking for non-perishable food – cans and dry goods. This year the need is especially great – the food bank is lower than in past years due, in part, to the closure of ComLinks.
Similar efforts are occurring in other communities throughout the country. Locally, Scouts in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake host similar events, but I do not know what dates they are using. All food donations stay local and go to the Saranac Lake Interfaith Food Pantry. In addition the Elks are helping us with providing sorting space when the bags are picked up.
On Saturday, November 10th, the troop will also be manning a collection location at the Elks lodge between 9am and noon.
A key goal of Scouting is Character Development and instilling Citizenship in youth. Scouting for Food is an opportunity for our scouts to learn about their community and provide service to those in need.
