The Saranac Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars monthly meeting is held every third Tuesday of the month at 7pm at the VFW on Broadway in Saranac Lake.

A regular Meting of the LPYAA will be held at the Olympic Training Center on Old Military Road.

Mission Statement:

1) The Lake Placid Youth Athletic Association exists to introduce, instruct and

promote sustained participation in sports to the youth in Lake Placid and

surrounding communities. They include (to date) soccer, hockey, basketball,

volleyball, baseball & softball.

Statements of Purpose:

1) To provide a safe and healthy environment for the youth in our community

to participate in a variety of sports.

2) To provide quality coaching which gives all participants the opportunity to

learn and play.

3) To promote, to the best of our ability, positive experiences for all children

participating in our programs by supporting a “kids first, winning second”

philosophy of competition.

Whiteface Mtn. Masonic Lodge #789, in conjunction with the CVPH North Country Regional Blood Center, will be conducting a Blood Drive on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 from 3:00-6:00 pm. The site will be the Adult Center at 135 Broadway in Saranac Lake.

Blood shortage is critical at this time of year throughout the region. Blood donations are an easy and affordable way to contribute to the relief of the sick, the injured, and those affected by natural disasters.

You may donate if you are generally healthy, not currently sick, have a cold sore or other viral infections, have not donated for at least 8 weeks, weigh at least 110 pounds and are over 18 years of age. Drink plenty of liquids and eat a hearty meal at least four hours before donating. Also drink lots of water or liquids immediately after donating.

Lake Placid Center for the Arts presents an Encore HD Screening of a new comedy that recently premiered at London’s National Theatre. Join us on Friday, April 12 at 7:30pm for People. Award-winning writer Alan Bennett is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner and Olivier Award-winning actress Frances de la Tour, with whom he worked on The History Boys and The Habit of Art.

People spoil things; there are so many of them and the last thing one wants is them traipsing through one’s house. But with the park a mess and a bath on the billiard table, what is one to do? Dorothy (Frances de la Tour) wonders if an attic sale could be a solution.

Alan Bennett is one of Britain’s most celebrated playwrights, and the much anticipated People is the sixth of his plays to have its premiere at the National Theatre. Following its original run at the National Theatre, The History Boys transferred to Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Play in 2006, and toured internationally before being turned into a film, again directed by Nicholas Hytner and with a cast including Frances de la Tour.

Bennett and Hytner also collaborated on the award-winning play and film The Madness of King George and their last stage production, The Habit of Art, was broadcast as part of National Theatre Live in 2010.

Saranac Lake Youth Baseball and Softball Signups begin tomorrow from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Saranac Lake Civic Center – The season runs mid May through mid July and includes Tee Ball for the 5 to 6 year olds, a Rookie League for the 7 and 8 year olds plus Minor and Major Baseball for kids 9 to 12 and currently grades 3 through 8 for softball.. The Cost is $35 for one child, $60 for two, $90 for three and $25 for each additional child..   Signups are Tomorrow, Wednesday the 17^th and again Wednesday April 24^th from 5:30 to 7pm at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.

Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring received its U.S. premieres in both staged and concert versions in Philadelphia, under Stokowski’s direction. Now, in a first-of-its-kind partnership with Philadelphia Live Arts, The Philadelphia Orchestra collaborates with the New York-based Ridge Theater Company to present a 21st- century treatment of The Rite of Spring with dancers, video projection, and theatrical lighting. Philadelphia also gave the first American performances of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, which will be performed by star soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

The program opens with a modern-day Philadelphia first, the world premiere of a brand new composition by Oliver Knussen, co-commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society Presents

“Leisure, Recreation and Tourism in Lake Placid and the Adirondacks”

The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society is pleased to announce the final program of its 2013 “Odds and Ends” Winter Lecture Series on Wednesday, April 24 at Howard Johnson’s Restaurant in Lake Placid.  The lecture will begin at 7:00 pm with attendees encouraged to come for dinner at 6:00 p.m.  The final program in the four-part series is “Leisure, Recreation and Tourism in Lake Placid and the Adirondacks”, presented by Peter Roland, Jr. and Art Lussi.

Lake Placid and the Adirondacks have a long history as a destination for leisure and recreation. Through historic photographs this program will look at the beginnings of the Lake Placid tourist industry in the 1850’s and its evolution through the present day. While many things have changed over the years the pursuit of leisure and recreation have been and will continue to be the driving force behind tourism in Lake Placid and the Adirondacks.

The Roland and Lussi families have a combined total of over 120 years experience as innkeepers in the Lake Placid area. Since 1999 Peter Roland, Jr. has been on the faculty at Paul Smith’s College teaching in the Hospitality, Resort and Tourism Management Program.  Art Lussi is associated with the Crowne Plaza Resort and Golf Club and is primarily responsible for the redevelopment of the former Lake Placid Club property.

All programs offered in the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society’s “Odds and Ends” Winter Lecture Series are free and open to the public. Please watch for the Memorial Day opening of The History Museum and special events throughout the season.  A new exhibit of the Stedman and Moses Collection of historic photographs will open in late May, with an opening reception on Friday June 7^th.

Saranac Lake will ring with the joyful sounds of Kim and Reggie Harris on May 6^th starting at 7:30 at Saranac Village at Will Rogers. Consummate musicians and storytellers, Kim and Reggie Harris combine a strong folk and gospel legacy with a solid background in classical, rock, jazz and pop music. Creative curiosity, years of road and stage experience and interactions with performers such as Pete Seeger, Ysaye Barnwell, Jay Leno, Tom Paxton, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Harry Belafonte and others, has led them to produce music that entertains and inspires.

Audiences at venues such as The Kennedy Center, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Smithsonian Institute, Reunion Arena in TX, the Psalm Festival in Graz, Austria, as well as a myriad of theatre arts centers, festivals, universities and schools, have given this inspiring duo standing ovations for their vibrant performances.

With numerous recordings on the Appleseed Recordings and the Folk Era labels they are also featured on a number of compilations, films and educational projects worldwide.

As a result of materials developed in their work with the Kennedy Center, Kim and Reggie have earned wide acclaimed for their contributions to the resources and knowledge base – in historical and educational circles – on the Underground Railroad and the modern civil rights movement.

Kim and Reggie Harris are dynamic and superbly talented traditional folk performers, whose captivating stage presence and unique harmonies has earned the respect and love of audiences throughout the US, Canada and Europe for over 30 years. They are unique in their ability to entertain audiences of any age and background as they blend their talents as singers, songwriters, educators, interpreters of history and cultural advocates.

Kim and Reggie’s  Partners in Education Program “Dream Alive” will be presented at the Saranac Lake School on Tuesday May 7^th. The stories of people such as Harriet Tubman and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have become a familiar part of the study of American History. The works of many other significant African-Americans from every walk of live and field of endeavor are not as well known. Dream Alive!, a multi-media presentation, will bring to light the heroes and sheroes: artists, educators, inventors, explorers, scientists, poets and other important contributors to the life and culture of America and the world. Kim and Reggie Harris have been affiliated with the John F Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education program for over two decades, offering multimedia performances for students and community, and in-depth workshops for educators at all grade levels. Touring, writing, researching and recording together for over 30 years, Kim and Reggie have amassed an amazing repertoire of African American music, blending spirituals and freedom songs, the old and the new.
