A 1939 copy of Superman No. 1 sold for $9.12 million at Heritage auction Thursday, setting a new record for the most expensive comic book ever sold. The sale surpassed the previous 2024 record when Action Comics No. 1 sold for $6 million. Three brothers discovered the comic in their late mother's attic inside a box of yellowed newspaper clippings. Their mother purchased the comic at age nine during the Depression in San Francisco and told her sons for years she had "rare comics somewhere" but couldn't remember the location. The 86-year-old comic received a 9.0 out of 10 grade from Certified Guaranty Company for its near-pristine condition. The brothers found the comic earlier this year while going through their mother's house, which had sat untouched since her death before the pandemic. (Story URL)
