Americans Spend Hundreds On Scalp Treatments Despite Doctor Skepticism

A new beauty trend has Americans paying up to $300 for luxury scalp treatments, though dermatologists question whether most people need such care. Social media has fueled the craze, with online searches for "scalp serum" jumping 77% in the past year. High-end head spas offering microscopic hair follicle analysis draw crowds in New York and Los Angeles. Beyoncé's Cecred brand sold one bottle of Restoring Hair & Edge Drops serum every 16 seconds from November through July. However, Dr. Maryanne Senna, director of the Hair Loss Center of Excellence at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, warns against unnecessary elaborate routines. "If you're not having a problem, there shouldn't be this huge drive to have to get all this stuff to put on your scalp," Senna said, noting "the only real danger is to a person's wallet."
