Poll Finds Even Six-Figure-Earners Are Feeling Strapped

Sunday, November 16, 2025 at 7:02 PM

A Harris Poll survey reveals one-third of Americans earning $100,000 or more annually consider themselves financially distressed. The study included 2,109 Americans, with 728 earning at least $100,000. Two-thirds of high earners say six-figure salaries no longer represent wealth but merely cover basic needs without comfort. "People used to feel when you got to six figures or above that it was a sign of financial stability," says Libby Rodney of the polling organization. "And now we just see that as a sign of surviving, and being in survival mode." Three-quarters used credit cards by necessity in recent months after running out of cash. Over half said they would need double their income to feel secure. Inflation drives the trend, with prices up 24% since 2020. Comerica Bank data shows people need $170,000 today to match a $100,000 salary's 2005 buying power. (Story URL)
