Study Suggests Diet And Exercise Safeguard Liver From Alcohol Damage

Thursday, August 28, 2025 at 8:01 PM

A new study published in the Journal of Hepatology finds that a healthy diet and regular physical activity can mitigate the harmful effects of alcohol consumption on the liver. Researchers analyzed data from over 60,000 U.S. adults and discovered that any level of daily drinking or binge drinking significantly increases the risk of liver-related mortality. However, adherence to a nutritious diet and consistent exercise was associated with a substantially lower risk of liver-associated death, even among heavy and binge drinkers. Specifically, a healthier diet reduced mortality risk by 86% in heavy drinkers and 84% in binge drinkers. Meanwhile, physical activity lowered the risk by 36% and 69% in those respective drinking categories. (UPI)
