Survey Finds Many People Feel The Arts Are Too Exclusive

Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 8:01 PM

A recent poll of 2,000 UK adults revealed that over a third view the arts as inaccessible and only for the privileged. Just 39% consider disciplines like film, TV and dance to be inclusive. Forms most associated with exclusivity include opera (53%), ballet (49%) and fine art (43%). As a result, 74% have never attended an orchestra performance, 42% avoid art galleries, and 26% haven't been to a museum. While those who have participated feel engaged (46%), inspired (29%) and joyful (30%), the leading barrier is the cost of tickets (42%). Only 26% see themselves represented in the arts. The research also found 61% believe behind-the-scenes roles aren't celebrated enough, despite their vital contribution. To make the arts more accessible, respondents suggested diverse performers (15%), cheaper tickets (42%) and feeling welcome (18%). (Talking Points)
