A new Charles F. Kettering Foundation/Gallup Democracy For All Project survey reveals 51 percent of Americans believe "U.S. democracy is performing poorly." Only 24 percent said their country's democracy "is performing well," while 25 percent rated the functioning as OK. The survey highlights widespread dissatisfaction with democratic institutions, with no more than one-third saying any are performing well. Majorities reported Congress, the criminal justice system and equal protection under the law are doing poorly. The findings come amid heightened political tensions, including recent political violence, congressional gridlock and heated rhetoric between politicians. (Story URL)
