Bare Hill Correctional Facility in Malone will be closing in March according to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. State Senator Dan Stec said he knows that staffing shortages are forcing consolidations at state prisons, but he’s worried the real problem isn’t being addressed by the state. The Senator said because of the DOCCS staffing shortages, many of the nearly 300 staff at Bare Hill should find positions within the region. Assemblyman Cashman reacted to the Bare Hill closure announcement by saying it’s wrong and the closing doesn’t make things safer at correctional facilities. Assemblyman Matt Simpson said closing Bare Hill doesn’t solve the prison crisis. He said the consolidation effort makes an already unsafe system even more dangerous by cramming inmates into overcrowded facilities. Bare Hill will close on March 11th.
