The Goodman Mountain Trail is expected to open soon following the euthanasia of a moose.
The presence of a bull moose has kept the Goodman Mountain Trail in Tupper Lake closed. Now, the DEC reports that the animal has been humanely euthanized. Department of Public and Ecosystem Health, Dr. Jennifer Bloodgood, said the health of the moose had clearly deteriorated over time. The large animal was first sighted near the summit of the mountain in May when hikers reported the moose tolerating close human presence. After assessing its condition, the DEC closed the trail to protect the moose and the recreating public. In the short term, the trial will remain closed while DEC completes a study on the moose. DEC will update the public when the area is clear and the trail is open for public access.
