A school bus driver shortage has been a reality in the area and statewide for years despite state efforts.
Amid a severe shortage of school bus drivers, the state has implemented several changes to make it easier for people to get a School Bus Only Commercial Drivers License. For example, in 2022 the DMV began allowing third parties to conduct commercial road tests, significantly increasing the capacity for these types of road tests statewide. Last year, the state implemented a federal waiver that allows school bus driver applicants to skip the engine compartment component, called the “under the hood” component, of the Road test.
