Amsterdam businessman Anthony Constantino, a contender for the GOP nomination in the upcoming 21st Congressional District special election, has threatened to run as an independent if state Sen. Dan Stec is selected as the Republican nominee. Constantino, who claims to be a frontrunner in the race, voiced his concerns about Stec’s candidacy in a Facebook post, alleging Stec is "anti-Trump" and stating that he would consider running independently to represent President Trump's supporters. The state Conservative Party recently endorsed Stec as its preferred candidate, which has fueled the tension. Republican party chairs have yet to announce a final decision, with Constantino, Stec, and others, including Assemblyman Chris Tague and Liz Joy, among the contenders. The special election, set to fill the vacancy created by Rep. Elise Stefanik’s expected appointment as U.N. Ambassador, could take place around April 2.
