North Country residents are encouraged to reduce the amount of rock salt used this winter.
To get the rock salt reduction message out the Department of Environmental Conservation has launched a campaign called “Don’t Be Salty” it informs area property owners and snow and ice removal professionals about the impacts of rock salt. According to the DEC, the overuse of salt can be costly for consumers, degrade infrastructure, contaminate runoff that enters streams and waterbodies, and impact drinking water.
