Direct File allows more tax payers to file for free
Last year NY State took part in a Direct File pilot program with the IRS. The success of that program will allow more people to file taxes online for free this year. In its first year, the program was open to a limited number of taxpayers with relatively simple returns. This year, the program expands eligibility, covering more tax credits and different types of income. Last year some 14,000 New Yorkers participated. This year, the Tax Department estimates that 3.4 million New York taxpayers will be able to use Direct File. The joint project with the IRS allows taxpayers to file their federal and state taxes. Filers can visit the website: Tax.N-Y.Gov to check qualifications.
