The DEC wants hunters to harvest more antlerless deer so changes to regulations have been proposed.
The DEC has announced several proposed regulatory changes to increase the harvest of antlerless deer. During recent hunting seasons, less than 15% of licensed hunters harvested one antlerless deer and only about 3% of hunters harvested two or more antlerless deer. Newly proposed regulations are intended to encourage hunters to take more antlerless deer to help better manage the population. Specifically, the actions are intended to reduce deer-vehicle collisions and improve forest regeneration and minimizing negative impacts of deer overabundance.
