State officials are warning people to protect themselves against tick and mosquito-borne illnesses.
Tick and mosquito populations can vary with weather conditions, habitat and other environmental factors. For example, warmer temperatures and rainfall can create more mosquito breeding habitats and faster development time, leading to higher mosquito populations. Mosquito-borne diseases include West Nile virus and last year, two human cases of Eastern equine encephalitis were reported. Ticks are active throughout the spring, summer and fall. Lyme disease is the most commonly tick-borne disease in the State. Over the last three years, NY State has averaged more than 17,000 new cases of Lyme disease each year.
