The state division of consumer protection has issued a consumer alert regarding moving scams.
According to the Better Business Bureau last year 718 complaints about movers were filed with a median average loss of over $750. Legitimate moving companies are registered. For moves within New York State a check with the DOT website to confirm if a moving company is licensed in the state. If moving out of State, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has a “Mover Registration” search function on their website.
